My First Year Experience. The great history of my family name "Diego".I came from a multiracial family. It's interesting because, Diego is actually my late great-great-grand father's name. He was a Spanish man and married to a Illocano Filipino woman. Illocano is a province of Illocos in North Philippines. They then had a child named Teodoro Fernando Diego, my late great grand father.
During the 1930's he graduated as a Surgeon in a Medical University. Soon later, he joined the Philippines Army Force as a surgeon and was transferred to Sulu. After years of his services in Sulu, along the way he met a woman named Asdara Hamdain. Like all love story, they fell in love with each other. Asdara came from a wealthy family called the Apok Sangkula from the South of Philippines. Her family was Sulu muslims and Teodoro was a Christian, Roman Catholic. Her father, Hamdain cares so much of their pride and dignity so he disapprove their love. They had the love as strong as death. After Teodoro quit his job, he and his love, my late great-grandmother, Asdara ran away from Sulu and built a family together in their new place in Sandakan. Back then, Teodoro had a job as a surgeon in Medical Group Hospital, North Borneo Chartered Company and also a rubber inspector (Chartered Company). His best friend, Valentine Amandus gave him a land property in a small town called Papar and built his family's house there. During the Japanese invasion in 1941, my great-grandfather was interrogated by the Japanese and was beaten until he was awfully ill. After the unfortunate event, his friends carried him to his house in Papar. Day by day he got sicker and sicker, until one day he was sent to Beaufort's Hospital and (relative considered) he died before the World War II ends. Teodoro and Asdara have 5 children; Agnes Diego, Purification Diego, Joseph Diego, Concepcion Diego, and Estaquio Diego. Joseph Diego is my grandfather. My grandfather was once a well-known Police Officer in my hometown. He was married with my late grandmother, Margaret Wilson and have seven kids together; Charles, Richard, Diana, John, Jasper, Johan and Vina Diego. My late grandmother is a Scottish/Kadazan raced. John Diego is my father's name. He is a Businessman/Contractor. He got married with my mother, Farah Jalumin, a business woman/contractor. Since my mother is a muslim, my father converted to become a muslim. His name was changed to Nazrin since then and they have three wonderful kids together; Zaid Diego, Kyla Diego and Alicia Diego (me). My parents got divorced when I was still a little girl, but their relationship now is still friends. Few years later, my father married Jackielou Munday, a Filipino-Australian from the Philippines and have two amazing children together Zaeem Diego and Ariana Diego. My stepmom and my mom's relationship are friends, more like sisters because they care for each other. Years later, my mother married John Bartalotta, an Italian-Australian man in Melbourne, Australia. My siblings and I were there at their wedding, it was a very great experience and his family are very nice and caring. She now lives in Melbourne, happily, for good. As for me, I am just a normal girl from North Borneo who enjoys art and solving problems. The reason why I chose to share the story of my family name is because I am proud of the name and am grateful to be part of it. We are one big Diego family, who care for each other since day one. Although "Diego family" are quite strict, but the love we have for each other is just as big as you can imagine. Well of course no family are perfect, we argue, we fight, we even stop talking to each other at times, but in the end family is family and the love will always be there. Familia son lo primero. Now, don't get me started on sharing the love story of how my mom and dad met. It was an- it still is an amazing story. |
